THE CORONAVIRUS BILL 1: DEFINITIONS

We will go through the Bill piece by piece, and report on its passage through Parliament. Here we start with the most basic element – the definition.

THE STATUTORY DEFINITION

Section 1 defines coronavirus. This section also makes it clear that a person who has had coronavirus, but is now clear, does not come within the definition of someone infected.

SECTION 1: THE MEANING OF CORONAVIRUS

Meaning of “coronavirus” and related terminology

(1)In this Act—
  • “coronavirus” means severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2
    (SARS-CoV-2);
  • “coronavirus disease” means COVID-19 (the official designation of the
    disease which can be caused by coronavirus).
(2) reference in this Act to infection or contamination, however expressed, is a
reference to infection or contamination with coronavirus.
(3)But a reference in this Act to persons infected by coronavirus, however
expressed, does not (unless a contrary intention appears) include persons who
have been infected but are clear of coronavirus (unless re-infected).
